Tyrone Poole, A Georgia native, graduated from LaGrange High School, where he lettered in both football and track. He was as a four-year starter at Fort Valley State University and became the first player from that school to ever be selected in the first round of the NFL draft. His career numbers included 41 starts in 42 games with 17 interceptions (262 yards) and 70 punt returns for 934 yards (13.3 avg). Poole also set the school record for the 200-meter dash and finished second in the national finals. He majored in business.

He was drafted by the Carolina Panthers, 22nd overall of the 1995 NFL Draft. He spent three years anchoring the Panthers’ secondary. He was traded to the Indianapolis Colts in 1998. He played three years for the Colts, starting almost every game. Poole signed with the Denver Broncos as a free agent before the 2001 season, however, he spent the entire 2001 NFL season on the reserve squad. He returned to full-time play for the 2002 season.

Poole signed with the New England Patriots before the 2003 NFL season. Poole was a starting cornerback for the Patriots defense that led them to a 14-2 record and a victory in Super Bowl XXXVIII over the Carolina Panthers.

Poole started the 2004 season again as a starting cornerback, but injured his knee in a Week 6 matchup with Seattle. Poole returned briefly for a few snaps near the end of a Week 14 game against Cincinnati, but was shut down after this and did not play again for the rest of the season. Still, the Patriots went on to win Super Bowl XXXIV, giving Poole his second Super Bowl ring.

For the 2005 season, Poole once again began the season as a starting cornerback. However, after playing against Oakland in Week 1, he injured his ankle and would not play again all season. The Patriots were eliminated in the divisional round and Poole parted ways with New England. After stints with the Raiders, Texans, Broncos, and Titans Poole retired in 2008 with 14 seasons under his belt.

He is the Author of the “Ultimate Success in the Game of Life”, and inventor of the “T38 Multi-Training Sled”.

The North Georgia Touchdown Club welcomes Heisman Trophy Winner George Rogers as guest speaker on October 3rd for the Player of the Week Dinner

The Duluth, Ga., native attended Duluth High and rushed for a still-standing school-record 2,286 yards as 1975 junior. He was highly-recruited as a senior and decided to attend South Carolina when coach Jim Carlen told him that he could play in his freshman year. Due to his large size — 6-2, 220 pounds — he seemed destined to play fullback rather than tailback. However, the Gamecocks had two running backs who graduated at the same time, so he began his college career as the starting tailback midway through his freshman season.

Rogers rushed for 623 yards as a freshman and then tallied 1,006 yards as a sophomore while splitting time with Johnnie Wright. However, it was Rogers’ junior campaign that launched him into the national spotlight, as he finished with 1,681 yards and eight touchdowns to earn All-American honors.

As a senior, Rogers ran his 100-yard rushing streak to 21 games, totaling a nation-best 1,781 yards while scoring 14 touchdowns. South Carolina finished 8-3 and earned a berth in the Gator Bowl. Rogers was a unanimous All-American selection and beat out Hugh Green and Herschel Walker for the Heisman.

Rogers went on to become the first player chosen in the 1981 NFL draft and starred for the New Orleans Saints before moving on to the Washington Redskins, where he helped lead his team to a Super Bowl Championship in 1988.
